Petunias

bowl-of-petunias-by-p-korle

I know why the only thought that passed through the mind of the bowl of petunias was “Oh no, not again.”

If you intend to follow me for any length of time you will soon come to realize my obsession with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Pretty much every point in my head can circle back to a Guide reference. For instance, where I express the lack of a point to life on the about page I nearly added that even were we to know the point it would be as useless to us as 42 without the question.

Not to mention Journey of the Sorcerer by the Eagles is simply the perfect song. Its remake for the movie is pretty sweet as well, although lamentably short.

I’m sorry America, the Brits just do comedy smarter and better.

Before I go on and turn this into a Douglas Addams shrine, there is a point for my post. That would be influence and inspiration. Hitchhikers Guide is a rather large one if you couldn’t yet tell. And I had a little thought of maybe starting a series of posts on the things that have personally inspired my writing and the places I turn to when I need a creative recharge.

Hitchhikers Guide is a wholly remarkable book that is classic British comedy and is sneakily very brilliant in its snark and sarcasm. As a writer, that is a quality I aspire to. Whether or not I achieve that is yet to be determined as I have yet to finish more than one scene of my novel.

But more than that, the book just gets life. The single best scene in both the book and the recentish movie with Slartibartfast and Arthur.

Slartibartfast: Perhaps I’m old and tired, but I think that the chances of finding out what’s actually going on are so absurdly remote that the only thing to do is to say, “Hang the sense of it,” and keep yourself busy. I’d much rather be happy than right any day.
Arthur Dent: And are you?
Slartibartfast: Ah, no.
[laughs, snorts]
Slartibartfast: Well, that’s where it all falls down, of course.

I don’t know, maybe I’m no more than a squealing fangirl. But I absolutely love this book and pretty much anything associated with it. I would love to meet the others like me out there to share in my obsession, so drop by Where is Andie to come find me and we can squeal together!

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
