Direction

Focus.

Do you have it?

I will be completely honest with you, I don’t. And you know what, I’m okay with it. For the most part at least.

I have grown enough as a person and a writer that I realize you can’t beat yourself into submission and expect positive results. You will wear down your heart and soul before you finish.

I am not suggesting by any means that you should give up when the going gets harder. I tried that too and only ended up flitting through all these things that I was so sure were my calling.

What I have learned is that to succeed in any endeavor, it’s less about the fighting for it than the relaxing of your obnoxious inner voices and settling comfortably down to the task.

Think about it. When you exercise the more tension you hold in the more damage you do to your body. But when you relax and warm up your muscles you are less likely to get hurt.

I feel the same thing applies to your brain. It’s too easy to wind yourself up and build up your task to monumental proportions. Soon all you can think of is that you can’t.

You can, simple as that.

Just relax and put one word out there after another. Put together one sentence, one paragraph, one scene, one chapter, and eventually you will have one book.

Don’t make it into something to be conquered, revel in the process and fuck it just enjoy the journey. Direction and purpose be damned.

  1. Honestly, no, I don’t feel like I have direction. The one thing I know for sure is that I want to write; however, I don’t know how I can get a full-time writing job. My college days are long past me, so this would be me starting all over again. It’s depressing, but like you said, I need to take my time.

    1. I’m the same way. I know my life has to be about books and/or writing. But how do you build a successful life and career in this world? I’m at the point where I just enjoy where I am, and build off what makes me happy. What I need will come in its own time. All the best!
